President’s Corner
Thank you for your confidence in me to serve as your president for another term. I will continue to work to keep the name Phoenix Union known in the City of Phoenix and strive to make us the best high school alumni association in the nation. There are many people who work together on the Board to make you proud; see the list of the Board for 2008-09 on page two. They are great folks and we’re a good team that I look forward to working with for another year. And, if you have not yet visited the Downtown Historic Office, the summer hours are Tues., Wed., and Thurs., 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., for June, July and August. Regular days and hours will resume in September. The Docents are dedicated men and women who donate their time to share the Downtown Historic Office with everyone who wants to see and taste a bit of Phoenix History.
The PUHS Alumni Office (620-764-1001) is the contact office for all reunion planners and all interested alums needing information on their reunion. In addition to the Phoenix Union and Phoenix Tech Alumni Associations, there’s an active association for North High, Camelback, East and Central High Schools. Please share the information with your family and friends who graduated or attended a Phoenix Union High School Districtcampus.
Who coined the phrase, “it’s a small world”? Well, it really is true. While on a cruise ship in the Pacific Northwest, I met two Phoenix Union graduates: Donna Johnson, class of 1957 and Jack Truitt, class of 1955. We still have many lost and wandering Coyotes out there waiting for one of us to find them.
Carol Perkins and the Picnic Committee met recently and discussed a number of items to help make the 2009 get together successful. Changes are in the works. Unfortunately, we had a shortage of food this year that was partly due to more than 100 walkins who were not pre-registered. Next year’s picnic, Saturday, March 29th, we plan to have prepaid reservations prior to the picnic. Watch for the registration form and additional information in the October issue of the Journal.
Many thanks to Julian Reveles, class of ‘54, for his continued support being our MC and contact person, and choosing the annual honorees. Good job!
Pete Zorbas (602-277-6341) and Reed Perkins (602-840-4726) are the organizers of the Vintage Car Display at the annual picnic. Please call either of them, as there will be a limit of 20 cars this year, due to the parking space issue.
Have a wonderful, safe, healthy and cool summer.
Sincerely,
Harriet

Upcoming Events:
Mark your calendar for November 29! The PUHSAA and their guests will gather at the Phoenix Airport Hilton for our 23rd Annual Dance. W. Steven Martin will be on hand to provide the music and take us back to the times when we students all gathered at the Boys Gym, which was festooned in crepe paper streamers and the mirrored ball, to dance the evening away. This year’s menu will be scrumptious as always and the highlight of the evening will be the dessert – a chocolate fountain - which each attendee can serve themselves with a selection of their choice.
Cost for the evening of dining and dancing is $30 per person. The deadline for reservations is November 24, 2008. See the reservation form on page six.
